Job Summary

The Network Engineer II is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and evaluation of network systems and communications equipment. Leads the design, implementation, operation, support, deployment, and distribution of network systems and communications equipment.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Leads complex operational activities for maintaining network systems and communications services including patching, backups, configuration, updates, and documentation.
  • Coordinates the installation and maintenance of network communications equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, completes preventative maintenance, and corrective actions to ensure overall integrity of network systems and communications services.
  • Researches and evaluates network architecture design, feasibility and cost studies.
  • Develops new techniques and procedures to enhance university networking and communications services.
  • Reviews progress, evaluates results, recommends new processes, and promotes best practices.
  • Works with vendors to complete projects such as cable/equipment installations.
  • Troubleshoots data cabling issues.
  • Serves as an escalation point for Telecommunications Technicians.
  • Tracks tickets in work order system.

Other Duties:

  • Serves as essential personnel and provides assistance in the event of an emergency on campus
  • Will be required to fulfill "on-call" duties as assigned or scheduled.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either seven years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Computer Science or related field and three years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional full-time experience with wide and local area networks, such as experience with common-carrier data networks.
  • Experience with large to very large enterprise computing environments that include multiple site locations.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 Years experience in LAN. WAN, WiFi, and data center network design.
  • Current entry level network certification (CCNA) desired.
  • Experience working in higher education desired.
  • Experience with Extreme Network is desired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn networking concepts such as OSI, TCP/IP, Routing and Switching (OSPF/RIP/BGP) principles, Palo Alto Networks, Juniper Networks, Extreme Networks, and Cisco Networks.
  • Knowledge of QoS in VoIP networking.
  • Knowledge of wired and wireless networks, connections, wiring and cabling standards, and network management tools and processes.
  • Knowledge of local and wide area networking, communications, and related hardware and software.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to take the initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and complex demands are involved.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to provide professional customer service.
  • Ability to design 802.11 based Wi-Fi networks and wired networks.
